Ellison is a very large park right outside our city. Aside from the playground, the park features access to the Irondequoit Creek, several athletic fields, tennis courts, Fort Schuyler replica, sledding hills and a legal off-leash dog park. Bathrooms, pavilions, grills, hiking and fishing can all be found within the park.

The Playground

There is one playground within Ellison Park. It is a decent size surrounded by green space and not far from Irondequoit creek. The playground has a spring car, rock wall baby swings and several slides. Use “Roadside Shelter” in google maps to find the playground. Dogs are not allowed at the playground.

The Hiking

Before heading out to Ellison Park print the park map and trail map. The color coded hiking trails and additional details will keep you on the right track.

Coyote Den Trail (pictured), this 1.1 mile walk (one way) passes by a few ponds and walkers can expect to see many birds and other wildlife.

Overlook Trail, this .6 mile walk overlooks Thomas cove and the stone quarry.

Mill Race Trail, this .4 mile walk, shows the stages between wetlands and a forest.

Indian Landing Trail, this 1.5 mile walk, is full of history, from the location of an old trading post (Fort Schuyler), to the presumed famous Butlers’s Rangers hideout, marked with commemorative plaques.

Butlers Gap Trail, this .7 mile walk (one way) has many interesting historical features as well as an intersection that overlooks the wetlands.

The Fishing

Good fishing spots are reported near the dog park and continues along the creek that winds through the park all the way from Blossom to Browncroft.

The Sledding

Ellison is 1 of 5 Monroe County Parks with a designated sledding hill. This one is located near the Ellison Park Disc Golf Course off of N Landing Rd. Once parked, head south (away from the restroom).
This spot is ideal for older kids (5+). It’s a decent walk from the car to the sledding hill and the trek back up the hill after sledding down is exhausting for the little ones (or for the caregivers stuck carrying the little ones).
Crowds will vary based on days of the week, time since last good snowfall, and outdoor temps. The bathroom shelter was open during our January visit!

The Ice Skating

The ice skating rink is located in the large parking lot off Blossom Road. There are no skate rentals; you must bring your own.

For rink conditions call 585 753-PARK (7275) during the week between 8:30am and 4:30pm, or 585-753-7270 on weekends between 10am and 4pm.

Groomed natural-ice surfaces are in Churchville, Ellison, and Highland Parks.

Ice skating is not permitted elsewhere in the Monroe County Parks.

There is no warming hut available nearby the rink at Ellison Park.

Ice conditions will vary depending on weather.

Skating is done at your own risk.

Within the dog park are three areas which include an enclosed gravel section for dogs under 25 pounds, an enclosed gravel section for all dogs, and a park-like area with benches, a walking path and a pond.
